Oh dear Dove…

Seems like Dove can’t do many things right lately- their underarm beautifying deodorant was widely perceived as a marketing ploy to make women feel self-conscious and awkward about a new region of their body, and now their ad for a new skin cream has been labelled implicitly racist.

Critics claim the ads imply that when Dove says that a cream will make your skin better, they really mean “whiter”, and that having white skin is the more beautiful “after” effect, whereas dark skin is the horrible “before effect”

Most have labelled this nonsense- although the ad was poorly designed, it was certainly not intended to be racist, especially as Dove has always promoted diversity- in terms of body size and ethnicity.

This latest blooper however has left many wondering if Dove have dropped the ball, and are no longer the leaders they once were when it came to body image in beauty advertising.
